On August 8, CNPC's first demonstration project of large-scale hydrogen production from renewable energy was launched in Yumen Oilfield.

Under this project, the abundant solar energy resources in Jiuquan, Gansu Province, are used to generate electricity, and water is electrolyzed into oxygen and hydrogen to produce green hydrogen. In the first phase of the project, a 30 MW photovoltaic power station, and a hydrogen production station with 3 1,000 Nm3/h alkaline electrolytic cells and 2 proton exchange membranes will be built in the oilfield's hydropower plant in Yumen City. The hydrogen production station is designed to deliver hydrogen of 2,100 tons per year, with purity exceeding 99.99%. The green hydrogen produced will be stably supplied for industrial and transportation purposes in surrounding areas. The project will provide a platform for demonstrating the research and development of technology and equipment for hydrogen production by water electrolysis.

On the same day, the Jiuquan Hydrogen Industry Development Alliance, and the Jiuquan New Energy Center of the National Energy Metering Center (Electricity) were announced to be established.

The Jiuquan Hydrogen Industry Development Alliance is co-funded by Yumen Oilfield Company together with 28 hydrogen enterprises, research institutes and financial institutions. It is committed to building a hydrogen supply center, a hydrogen equipment center and a hydrogen application demonstration area, by coordinating the local hydrogen players and integrating and optimizing hydrogen resources, in order to promote the development of the hydrogen industry, build Jiuquan into a city of hydrogen, and empower the hydrogen industry chain in the province.
